Australian Citizenship Application Process

Overview

The Australian citizenship application process typically takes between 6 and 18 months from lodgement to the citizenship ceremony. The timeline varies depending on your location, the completeness of your application, and the volume of applications being processed.

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

Before you apply, ensure you meet all eligibility criteria including residency requirements, character requirements, and age requirements. Review our eligibility guide for full details.

Step 2: Prepare Your Documents

Gather all required documents. This includes your passport, birth certificate, evidence of permanent residency, penal clearance certificates, and any change of name documents. Make sure all foreign-language documents have accredited English translations.

Step 3: Lodge Your Application Online

Applications for Australian citizenship by conferral are lodged online through the Department of Home Affairs' ImmiAccount system. You will need to:

1. Create an ImmiAccount at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au
2. Complete Form 1300t (Application for Australian citizenship by conferral)
3. Upload supporting documents
4. Pay the application fee (currently AUD $540, subject to change)

Step 4: Receive Acknowledgment

After lodging, you will receive an acknowledgment letter or email confirming receipt of your application. This includes your application reference number, which you will need for all future correspondence.

Step 5: Book and Sit the Citizenship Test

If you are aged 18 to 59, you will be invited to book your citizenship test. This is done online. You must book and attend the test at a Department of Home Affairs office. The test consists of 20 multiple-choice questions, and you need at least 15 correct answers to pass (75%).

Your test result is provided immediately. If you pass, your application continues processing. If you do not pass, you can attempt the test again.

Step 6: Citizenship Interview (if required)

In some cases, you may be asked to attend an interview with a Department of Home Affairs officer. This is to verify your identity, discuss your application, and clarify any issues. Not all applicants are interviewed.

Step 7: Application Decision

The Department will assess your application holistically. This includes your test result, your character assessment, and all submitted documents. If approved, you will receive a letter of approval. The decision can take several months.

Step 8: Attend the Citizenship Ceremony

Once approved, you will be invited to attend a citizenship ceremony, usually organised by your local council. You have 12 months from the date of approval to attend a ceremony. If you do not attend within this period, your approval may lapse.

Step 9: Apply for an Australian Passport

After the ceremony and receiving your citizenship certificate, you can apply for an Australian passport. This is a separate process through the Australian Passport Office.

• 90% of applications: processed within 14 months
